Our plans for improvements

We're good, but we could always get better. Here's some things we've got planned for the near future.

A warmer, brighter welcome

From 2018, our fabulous station teams will be found in light, bright, open-plan Customer Zones that look like the future.

In the meantime, members of the station teams are now carrying smart devices where they can access the latest information - so just ask.


Improvements to our station facilities

We’re investing £1.4m in new screens, electronic posters and interactive touchscreens with up-to-the minute information, including a map of station facilities, onward transport information and customer service contact information.

And we’re spending £300k per year on improving station access, safety and comfort, with the installation of more automatic doors, handrails and seating.

More space for cycles and cars

Here’s what we’ve got planned to make cycling or driving to our stations easier:

  • 600+ more car parks spaces this year
  • 500+ more new cycle spaces next year
  • New secure cycle compounds at Doncaster, Durham, Newark and Peterborough in 2017


Free Wi-Fi at all stations

Wi-Fi is now available and free in Peterborough, Grantham, Newark Northgate, Retford, Wakefield, Doncaster, Darlington, Durham and Berwick and we have plans to extend this to London King's Cross, Leeds, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh Waverley.


Spruced up First Class lounges

Our First Class lounges have been spruced up to offer lighter, brighter havens of peace where you can work, read or simply relax. You’ll find free Wi-Fi, power sockets, complimentary newspapers and refreshments available. Check them out here!

We’re also making a number of our First Class lounges available for free to local businesses and community groups during the evening.

Upgrading our trains

We’re spending £21m to improve the quality and reliability of all our current trains, including new seat covers, carpets and tables and all on-board signage. We’re refurbishing all on-board toilets with new lighting and new hand dryers.

On long distance services, we’re introducing airport-style ‘Luggage Hubs’ where you can store your luggage securely throughout the journey.

Brand new trains

We’re introducing 65 brand new Azuma trains from 2018. That’s 497 new carriages and 12,200 more seats.


A fresh approach to food and drink

  • New and improved food options created by celebrity chef James Martin with a updated seasonal menu and new hot choices in Standard too.
  • On-board bean-to-cup coffee machines serving freshly ground coffee

Better connections

We are planning for the East Coast Main Line to be better connected than ever with brand new services to key destinations and 75 more station calls, every day.
