Travel Disruptions (6)

Poor weather may affect your journey this morning

Very strong winds will affect parts of the UK this morning. The Met Office state that there is the potential for gusts of 60-70 mph quite widely and a small chance of winds reaching 80 mph in places. There is also a warning of more snow and ice for Scotland and northern England.

High winds can cause a number of problems for the railway, in particular obstructions caused by downed trees and other debris blown onto the lines. In exposed coastal areas, where gusts are strongest high waves may also cause damage. As a result, Network Rail may impose speed restrictions, to allow trains to run safely, and this could lead to extended journey times.

Details of any changes that the Train Operating Companies will be making to their services will be published here.

Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express:

Winds and gusts of between 50-60 mph have been forecast until early morning across the Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express network. Until 06:00, all trains running across the Sussex area will be restricted to run at 50 mph. Network Rail will pro-actively be checking for trees that may be affected by this adverse weather, and some early morning trains may be altered or cancelled if any lines are found to be blocked.

Great Northern and Virgin Trains East Coast:

Electric trains which run between London Kings Cross and Peterborough / Grantham are subject to speed restrictions of 50 mph.

Please allow for an extended journey time of up to 50 minutes if you are travelling between these stations until 09:00.

An obstruction on the track at Stevenage means that some southbound lines are blocked.
Network Rail have staff attending to clear the obstruction from the line, however, whilst this is ongoing, services will be delayed or subject to alteration.

Poor weather conditions affecting South Western Railway this morning

Poor weather conditions are affecting South Western Railway services this morning.

Trees have been reported to be blocking the railway at the following locations:

  • Between Guildford and Havant
  • Between Woking and Guildford - CLEARED
  • Between Basingstoke and Eastleigh
  • Between Alton and Aldershot

Train crews are assessing the extent of the situations to try to resolve the issues themselves, but it may be that a specialist team is needed to go and remove the trees.

As various lines are disrupted, services will be delayed, and some may be subject to short notice alterations. Some trains may also be diverted via an alternative route.

We anticipate disruption to services will continue throughout the morning peak.
